Hi! The cabin is booked for 14–16 March. It sleeps six, so there's room for everyone. Could you bring the board games? Jordan

Count me in! I'll bring the games and snacks for Saturday night. Should we split the cost now or after the trip?

After is fine, I'll send everyone the total once we're back. See you on the 14th! Jordan

How to make a fake Gmail email

  1. 1

    Set the subject and people

Under People, type the subject in "Subject" and the name of the person you write with. Use "+ Add person" for a thread with more people.

  2. 2

    Write the emails

Add each email with "+ From me" or the "+ From" button with the other name, and set its time. Line breaks stay as you type them.

  3. 3

    Download the PNG

Save the thread as a PNG at 2x or 3x, as a phone screen or the whole thread. No watermark.

What makes it look like a real Gmail thread

  • Subject and Inbox chip

The thread opens with the subject in large type, the grey "Inbox" label and a star, under the app's back, archive and delete icons.

  • Earlier emails collapsed

Like the Gmail app, every email except the last shows as one row: a letter avatar, the sender, the time and the first line as a snippet.

  • The latest email open

The last email opens in full with "to me" (or "to Jordan Lee" when you sent it), the reply and more icons, and the body with its line breaks.

  • Reply, Reply all, Forward

The buttons under the thread match the app. "Reply all" appears once three or more people are in the thread.

  • Photos and reactions

Add a photo with "+ Photo" and a caption, give people a profile photo instead of the letter avatar, and add an emoji reaction to the open email.

  • Dark or light, five languages

Switch between light and dark mode. "Inbox", "to me" and the buttons come in English, Portuguese, German, Spanish or French.

How to make the Gmail thread look real

  • Write a subject people would really type: short, without a full stop, such as "Cabin weekend in March".
  • Start emails with a greeting and end with a name on its own line. Gmail keeps the line breaks, so a blank line between paragraphs looks right.
  • Keep the first line of each earlier email meaningful: it is the snippet people read in the collapsed rows.
  • Use full names for the sender, like "Jordan Lee". The letter avatar takes the first letter, or add a profile photo.
  • Space the times out. Emails take minutes or hours to answer, not seconds; for older emails you can type a date such as "Oct 28" in "Time".
  • Set "Status bar time" a few minutes after the last email.

Common mistakes

  • Chat-style messages

One-word emails sent a minute apart look like a chat. Write fewer, longer emails with a greeting and a sign-off.

  • No subject

Without one the thread shows "(no subject)". Fill in "Subject" under People.

  • Times that go backwards

A reply at 9:05 under an email sent at 10:30 is impossible. Read the times top to bottom before you download.

  • "Reply all" with two people

Gmail only shows "Reply all" when more people are on the email. Add a third person if your story needs it.

  • A clock earlier than the thread

A status bar at 9:41 above an email from 18:20 gives the image away. Set "Status bar time" after the last email.

Fake Gmail questions

Is the Gmail generator free?
Yes. Make as many email threads as you like and download the PNG for free, with no watermark and no account.
Can I show email addresses?
No. Like the collapsed view in the app, the thread shows names only. The open email reads "to me" or the other person's name.
Can I add a photo to an email?
Yes. Under the messages, press "+ Photo" and pick an image, then change the sender on its row and type a caption if you like. The image stays in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Can I make an email with several people?
Yes. Under People, use "+ Add person". The open email then lists everyone after "to", and the "Reply all" button appears.
Are my emails uploaded anywhere?
No. The thread is saved only in your browser and the PNG is made there too.
Can I make a fake email from a bank or a real person?
No. It is for mock-ups, stories and lessons. Phishing, passing made-up emails off as real, or impersonating someone is against our acceptable use policy.
