15 text story ideas for TikTok and YouTube Shorts
Published 1 November 2026
The hardest part of a text story video is not the screenshots, it is the plot. Here are 15 ideas that work in a chat, each with a hook for the first message and a twist for the end. All of them are fiction and safe to post.
What makes a text story work
A hook in the first bubble, short lines, and a twist the viewer did not see coming. Twelve to twenty messages fill 30 to 60 seconds. The best plots need only two people, or one group chat, and something small that goes wrong in a funny or surprising way.
Funny and wholesome
- The wrong number. Hook: "is this the guy selling the couch?" A stranger plays along for days. Twist: they end up helping move the couch, and a friendship starts.
- Grandma learns emoji. Hook: "the soup is ready 💀" and nobody knows if dinner is cancelled. Every reply makes it worse. Twist: grandma knew all along and is trolling the family.
- The pet sitter updates. Hook: "everything is fine, quick question though." The updates get stranger. Twist: the cat has adopted a second cat from next door.
- The roommate fridge war. Hook: "who ate my yogurt" and labels that get more passive-aggressive. Twist: the yogurt thief was the landlord fixing the fridge.
- Autocorrect ruins the job offer. Hook: "thank you so much for the opportunity, I'm very exited" and it gets worse from there. Twist: the recruiter replies with their own typo and the offer stands.
Mystery and twist
- The message from yourself. Hook: a contact saved as "Me" texts "don't open the fridge". Twist: it is a scheduled message they set a year ago and forgot.
- The lost luggage tracker. Hook: "my suitcase is in another country" with location updates. Twist: the bag goes on a better holiday than its owner.
- The mysterious neighbour. Hook: a note slipped under the door, then a text from an unknown number. Twist: the neighbour only wants the Wi-Fi password back.
- The time-capsule chat. Hook: messages to an old number from ten years ago. Twist: the new owner of the number answers and has kept every message.
- The surprise that almost leaks. Hook: a planner texts the birthday person by mistake. Everyone covers it up badly. Twist: the birthday person was planning a surprise for them too.
Group chat chaos
- Planning the trip. Hook: "ok who's actually coming." Six people, six opinions, one spreadsheet. Twist: the quiet friend books everything in one message.
- The family chat. Hook: dad changes the group name again. Twist: mum changes it back and adds a photo nobody approved.
- The office lunch order. Hook: "just tell me your order, it's not hard." Twist: the order arrives at the wrong office, and the other office sends a thank you.
- The reply-all disaster. Hook: someone sends a message meant for one person to the whole class chat. Twist: it is a compliment, and it starts a chain of them.
- The group project. Hook: "meeting at 7?" Silence. Twist: everyone did the whole project on their own, five times over.
From idea to video
Write the script, then build the chat in the iMessage or text message generator, or the group chat generator for the last five ideas. Export a phone-screen PNG after every new message and place them on your video timeline, 1 to 3 seconds each. Our guide to text story videos walks through every step.
Pick the app your characters would use: iMessage for friends in the US, WhatsApp for families and most of the world, Snapchat or Instagram DMs for teenagers. If the story is in another language, set the "Chat language" in Settings so the app's labels match.
Use it the right way
Text stories are fiction, so say so in the caption. Use invented names, never a real person's name or number, and never present a made-up chat as a real leak, proof or evidence. Our acceptable use page has the details.
