How to make a Discord message screenshot that looks real

Published 1 November 2026

Discord is where gaming groups, fan communities and study servers talk. Here is how to build a convincing Discord channel or DM screenshot for a video, a meme, a bot mock-up or a lesson, and the small details that give a staged one away.

What you need

A channel name or the other person's name, profile photos if you want them, and a short script. Fakeconvo's Discord message generator draws the chat in the Discord style, is free, needs no account and puts no watermark on the PNG. Your photos and text stay in your browser.

Five steps to a realistic Discord chat

  1. Pick a channel or a DM. Under People, keep "Group chat" on for a server channel and type the channel in "Group name": "game night" shows as "# game-night", with the "Welcome to #game-night!" banner at the top. Use "+ Add person" for more members; each one gets a role colour. Turn "Group chat" off for a DM: the header shows the other person's avatar with a green online dot, and the input reads "Message @name".
  2. Write the messages. Under Messages, use "+ From …" for the others and "+ From me" for yours. Discord has no bubbles: each group starts with a round avatar, the name and "Today at 9:41", and the next messages from the same person sit right under it. Click the round button before a name under People to give that person a profile photo, or keep the default avatar in their colour.
  3. Add replies and reactions. Pick an older message in "Reply to" and the message gets Discord's curved line to a small avatar and the quoted text above it. Under "Reactions", tap an emoji to add a chip under the message.
  4. Add photos and notices. "+ Photo" posts an image, with an optional "Caption". "+ Date / notice" adds a line such as "Theo joined the server.", drawn with Discord's green arrow.
  5. Set the look and export. Turn on "Dark mode" for the theme most people use, set the "Status bar time" and battery, and download the PNG at 2x or 3x, as the phone screen or the whole chat.

Details that make a Discord chat look staged

Real channels are fast and messy: short lines in a row, lower case, a reaction instead of an answer, someone replying to a message from further up. One long, perfectly punctuated block of text reads like an email, not like Discord.

Watch the times and the extras. A pause of an hour or more starts a new message group with the avatar again, so keep a live conversation a minute or two apart. Discord shows no read checks and no "Seen", so don't add them in an edit. For an older DM, type a status like "Idle" in "Status under the name" instead of the green online dot.

Use it the right way

Discord screenshots are for videos, memes, stories, community and bot mock-ups, and lessons, such as showing a server what a fake "free Nitro" message looks like. Do not put words in the mouths of real people, do not make a chat that looks like proof of something that never happened, and do not use one to scam, bully or embarrass anyone. Our acceptable use page has the details.
