How to make a group chat screenshot that looks real

Published 1 November 2026

A group chat is the fastest way to show a plan falling apart, a family joke or a team thread in a video, a deck or a lesson. Here is how to build one in a few minutes, and the details that make a group look staged.

What you need

A group name, three to six members and a short script of who says what. Fakeconvo's group chat generator draws the chat in the WhatsApp style, is free, needs no account and puts no watermark on the PNG. Everything stays in your browser.

Five steps to a realistic group chat

  1. Name the group. Under People, switch on "Group chat" and type the "Group name", like "Weekend plans 🏕️". The header shows that name and, under it, every member's name, with "You" for you.
  2. Add the members. Press "+ Add person" for each extra member and type their names the way they would be saved in a phone: first names, nicknames, "Mum". The order in the list sets each person's colour. Removing a person also removes their messages.
  3. Write the conversation. Under Messages, use the "+ From …" button of each person and "+ From me" for yours. In a group, the sender's name appears in their colour above their first message, and messages in a row from the same person share that name, just as in the app.
  4. Add replies and reactions. Use "Reply to" when someone answers a message from further up; the quote shows the original sender's name in their colour. Add "Reactions" like 😂 or 👍 where a real group would react instead of typing "ok". Use "+ Date / notice" for the day above the first message.
  5. Check the details, then export. Give each message a "Time" that goes forward, set your own messages' "Status", and choose "Dark mode", "Show timestamps" and "Read receipts" under Settings. Download the PNG at 2x or 3x, as the phone screen or the whole chat.

Details that make a group look staged

Real groups are uneven: one or two people do most of the talking, someone answers an hour late, and somebody only reacts. If every member sends exactly two tidy messages in turn, it reads like a script. Short bursts of three or four messages from one person are normal.

Times give it away too. Messages in a busy group come a minute or two apart, then go quiet; a reply to an old message comes with a later time, not the same minute. Keep names consistent with how a phone would show them, and avoid full first-and-last names for close friends.

Use it the right way

Group chat screenshots are for videos, sketches, stories, social media posts, app designs and lessons. Do not put words in the mouths of real people, do not make a chat that looks like proof of something that never happened, and do not use one to bully or embarrass anyone. Our acceptable use page has the details.
